Yeh dooriyan..

Yeh dooriyan, In raahon ki dooriyan,
Nigahon ki dooriyan,
Hum rahon ki dooriyan,
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan....

Kyun koi paas hai, Door hai,
Kyun koi,Jaane na koi yahan pe....

Aa Raha paas ya door mein ja raha,
Janu na main hoon kahan pe....

Yeh dooriyan, In raahon ki dooriyan,
Nigahon ki dooriyan,Hum rahon ki dooriyan,
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan....

Kabhi hua yeh bhi, Khali rahon pe bhi,
Tu tha mere saath
Kabhi tujhe milke lauta
mera dil yeh khali khali haath,

Yeh bhi hua kabhi, Jaise hua abhi,
Tujhko sabhi mein paa liya....

Tera mujhe kar jaati hai dooriyan,
Satati hain dooriyan, Tarsati hain dooriyan,
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan....

Kaha bhi na maine, Nahi jeena maine,
Tu jo na mila, Tujhe bhule se bhi,
Bola na maine ki chahun fasla

Bas fasla rahe, Ban ke kasak jo kahe,
Ho aur chahat yeh aur jawan
Teri meri mit jaani hai dooriyan,
Begani hai dooriyan, Hat jaani dooriyan,
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan....

Kyun koi paas hai, Door hai, Kyun koi,
Jaane na koi yahan pe....

Aa Raha paas ya door mein ja raha,
Janu na main hoon kahan pe....

Yeh dooriyan, In raahon ki dooriyan,
Nigahon ki dooriyan,Hum rahon ki dooriyan,
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan....

Agnee

....the new face of Indi-rock is the perfect blend of contemporary musicians. The band formed about a year back comprises of the trio - Arijit, Koko and Mohan. What adds the majaical touch to this band is the unique individual styles and influences that each of these members bring with them. Arijit with his Jazz-Rock, Koko with Classic rock/pop/indian and Mohan with carnatic/hindustani classical music. That's indeed a huge pool of talent!!!!!

Though I havent heard too many songs by them, the very few that I have listened to, have mesmerized me. I absolutely fell in love with the new theme song that they composed for Splitsvilla-2 (why I watched that crappy show is a totally different post by itself, so no questions entertained right now!!) . I've been desperately looking for the source of this music and finally managed to find out today and I'm damn thrilled about it :)

Here's the song I'm talking about. I *loved* the melodic content of it...beautiful!!
(The band was invited on the show to play the song and the video below is that part..)

More details on the band here

I've heard and read that they have a great stage presence... waiting to see them live on stage sometime..

Dev D's music...

I never bothered to listen to the songs from Dev D till I watched the movie recently. The only song that was given limelight in the promos/trailers was 'Emotional Atyachaar' which didnt appeal to me much, though it was different and funny.

But when I watched the movie I realized that it has lovely music - not just one, but a lot of good tracks!!! I would have really missed it out if I hadn't seen the movie. I guess thats why the initial marketing/promos is very important to sell the movie, especially its music. With the busy lives that we all lead, not many of us go buy CD's or download songs of all the movies that release. It's either through word of mouth or something catching your attention in the trailers.... I feel Dev D's music didnt get all the credit it deserves only because one song got all the attention and buzz.... what a waste!

Amit Trivedi, who has earlier composed for the movie Aamir, has made some marvellous tunes for Dev D. He has tried just about everything - rock, pop, bhangra, fusion, classical...and more! There are about 18 sound tracks but I have fallen in love with the 2 songs 'Nayan Tarase' and 'Paradesi'...both are folk fusion tracks. While Paradesi has a slight western touch to it, Nayan Tarase starts with a classical touch and progresses a bit towards rock...Amit gives his own vocals to Nayan Tarase; his voice adds to the lovely music. Toshi (one of the favorites in Star Voice of India show) does an awesome job with the song Paradesi...I absolutely loved his voice.

Some of the other good songs to look out for - Yahi meri zindagi, Saali Khushi, Duniya and Dhol Yara Dhol...

Rehman does it again!

I have always been a big fan of Rehman's music, from the days of Roja. I can never forget the songs 'Chinna Chinna Aasai..' and 'Pudu Vellai Mazhai...' They'll always remain in my favorite list..

I feel he is one such guy in the industry who has something fresh and unique in every piece of music that he composes. Hmmm...some people are just gifted in life! Waiting for his music does seem worthwhile to me...

After working his magic with 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi...' in JTYJN and winning the Golden Globe award for Slumdog Millionaire, Rehman is back again to pour his charm in Rakesh Mehra's Delhi-6. It has about 10 tracks which is a fusion of various genres. He is never scared of experiementing... you can see a dash of rap, hip-hop, alternative rock and jazz in his compositions. That's the best part of his music, u get variety...!

The promos of Delhi 6 opened with the song 'Masakali..Matakali'. Obviously then it was thought to be the best of the 10 songs... I absoutely loved it!! The music is very playful and chirpy with a fluttery sensation and Mohit Chauhan's (front man of the band Silk Route at one point) voice adds a rustic charm to it and makes it even more desirable...It's sometimes impossible for me to proceed into the album to listen to the rest of the numbers, without playing this on Repeat mode...I just love listening to this over n over again...

I also loved the song 'Arziyan...' which has a Sufi touch to it. It's simplicity, melody and lyrics impeccably echo it's heartfelt emotion... Now, it's kinda difficult to choose the best between these two :)

Let's just hope the movie is not a let down and does as good as it's smashing sountracks!

Violet Hill...

This song 'Violet Hill' (Alternate Rock genre) is by the band Coldplay from one of their recent albums Viva la Vida or Death and all his friends (released May 2008). It is supposed to be the group's latest & first single..

I heard bits of it on Zee Cafe yesterday and it really caught my attention, so downloaded it immediately and have listened to it like a zillion times by now! I absolutely loved the music and even the lyrics... During its first radio play, this song is supposed to have gotten about 600,000 downloads!!

I have always loved Coldplay's deep and soulful style.... It's nice to see that the band is still making such wonderful music even after the massive success of A Rush of blood to the Head and X&Y.

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow
Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze
Down below
When the future’s architecture

By a carnival of idiots on show
You’d better lie low
If you love me

Won’t you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God
Priests clutched onto bibles

Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft
Bury me in honor

When I’m dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds
If you love me

Won’t you let me know?
I don’t want to be a soldier

Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below
So if you love me

Why’d you let me go?
I took my love down to Violet Hill

There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
So if you love me

Won’t you let me know?
If you love me,

Won’t you let me know?

An ever green bollywood song, from the movie Masoom (1983).... with Gulzar at his best and music by R.D Burman... I fall in love with it every time I listen to it...!! Hard to find such music and lyrics these days...
I love both the male and female versions of the song... but the one in Lata Mangeshkar's voice is too good... her voice itself adds that golden touch to the song, so soothing....

tuz se naaraaj naheen jindagee
hairaan hoo main
tere maasoom sawaalon se
pareshaan hoo main

jeene ke liye sochaa hee nahee
dard sanbhaalane honge
muskuraye to, muskuraane ke
karza utaarane honge
muskuraoo kabhee to lagataa hai
jaise hothhon pe, karza rakhaa hain

On the top...

..... of my current playlist

Kabhi Kabhi Aditi ... (Jane Tu Ya Jane Na)
- An AR Rahman composed number from the movie 'Jane Tu Ya Jane Na' with playback by Rashid Ali makes it a very different song altogether (Rashid's voice quality really suits the tempo and mood of the song) Unlike the recent ARR songs, this one is a fast and peppy number and really gets addictive...It's a typical Rahman number; I call it 'typical' coz you have to listen to the song a few times before you fall in love with it! I feel Rahman has done a *great* job with this song, something very different compared to Swades, Jodha Akbar kinda music... (which too are my favorite ofcourse!) I suggest u listen to the song at least 3-4 times before qualifying it as 'not good' in one shot :)

Koi aane wala hai... (Strings)
- Title song from their new album 'Koi aane wala hai' released last month; the paki band doesnt disappoint their fans yet again with this new release, after Duur and Dhani. Faizal, the lead singer really does have a golden voice and I just love it! The music video has John Abraham featuring as an angel....an attempt to add a stint of glamour! It did work before, he and Sanjay Dutt featured along with the band for one of the songs in Zinda....

Time of your life...

Been listening to 'Green Day' over the last couple of days... love this song a lot... more for its lyrics than for the music...

Another turning point;
a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist;
directs you where to go.
So make the best of this test
and don't ask why.
It's not a question
but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs
and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf
In good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories
and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth,
it was worth all the while.
It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

Jagjit Singh - live in concert

What could have been better than me getting to watch one of my favorite singers live in concert?! I had missed the last 2 concerts of his and this time I was waiting eagerly.. only to get a bit disappointed at the end.

A fund raiser event organized by 'Chaitanya Welfare Society' on account of world AIDS day yesterday (Dec-1) was a big let down. The whole organization of the event was pretty pathetic.. people had to wait in long queues for nearly an hour to get inside the venue and it was total chaos. And the next most important thing - acoustics, was totally screwed up..along with the lighting... I felt that listening to him on a CD would have been a much better option! Crowd handling was quite bad too.. people were just moving around all the time while the show was on which was pretty distracting and there was no way one could really get involved in listening to his music... To top it all, he didnt even sing many of his great ghazals which we were all waiting to hear.....I really didn't feel my soul stirring in the same way as it did in the days when I grew up to become his huge fan.... His recent albums seem to have lost that variety and innovation and they dont seem to appeal in the same way as his old ghazals used to...
I also heard from people that his concerts have become very predictable. (I have no comments here 'coz this was my first time..) He follows the same pattern every time, cracks the same jokes and connects with the audience in the same way... and that when he picks up the usual 2 or 3 punjabi songs, thats when u know the show is going to end!

The sad part here was that they priced the tickets at 550,1100 and 2k.. and it was absolutely no value for money. I understand that if someone is raising funds for a noble cause this is still fine and it makes sense, but at the end of it people who come there to watch the show should be able to enjoy it at least!

Am hoping that sometime in future I'll get to hear a better Jagjit Singh live in concert... along with Ghulam Ali would be even better! :)

Ghazal Maestro..

I managed to get almost the entire collection of Jagjit Singh's ghazals finally! Been listening to it since the last 3 weeks and I am so mesmerized by his music .. I have no words to put across. Had heard a few famous ghazals of his but never really listened to the whole set... now I'm an even bigger admirer of him. He is undoubtedly one of the most well known ghazal singers in the world today. Found these lines on some website while reading about him..

"His voice, a true gift of God, has the pain that an "Ashiq" feels after loosing his beloved, the love that a mother seeks for her child, the tranquility that a "Saaqi" delivers, the willing fear that a boy has when she walks in the room. There is absolutely no doubt that Jagjit Singh with his unique composing and singing style is the torchbearer of the survival of Ghazals in India."

The kind of intoxication that he gets in his voice (whatever may be the reason!) is AWESOME... it's mystical and it just takes me into a state of trance. A bad day.. quirky mood.. whatever be it.. listening to a couple of his ghazals just gets me back to feeling good... Well thats what music does... whatever kind it may be.. but this works wonders for me! Missed his live concert twice... once in b'lore and hyd.. Hoping that I get one more chance...

Few of his MUST HEAR songs...
  • Tum itna jo muskurarahe ho... (Arth)
  • Jhuki jhuki si nazar.. (Arth)
  • Tumko dekha to yeh khayal aaya.. (Saath Saath)
  • Hoshwalon ko khabar kya.. (Sarfarosh)
  • Hoton se choolo tum.. (Prem Geet)
  • Tera chehra kitna suhana hai..
  • Koi fariyaad.. (Tum Bin)
  • Badi Nazuk hai.. (Jogger's Park)

Soulful music...

Last few posts of mine have been about music.... that's what I've been doing off late.. listening to more and more songs.. of different genres... and now I have one more to add to it.

I'm sure most of us would have heard of Kailash Kher, one of the most popular singers of sufi music.. of the "Allah ke bandhe" fame, who also features in the league of singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Rabbi Shergill. I just happened to listen to one of his songs, on TV, from his recent album and I was so touched by it. This made me download a lot of his songs and when I heard them I was just mesmerized by his voice. Ifelt, till now, I was really missing out on some good piece of music! His raw, high-pitched voice coupled with meaningful lyrics makes his songs so unique and literally "soulful". It's amazing to see the kind of energy and the vibes that are generated when u sing his songs... really wonderful!

If u haven't heard him yet, then here are some of the songs that u ought to hear..
  • Teri deewani ... (his best song so far..)
  • Allah ke bandhe..
  • Chak de phatte..
  • Piya re piya re..
  • Kinna sona...

Old is gold...

I listened to Mohd.Rafi today after a long time... there seems to be some kind of a magic in his voice that makes me keep listening to his songs .. Sometimes they wud be on my playlist for months! Undoubtedly, Rafi and Kishore Kumar have a golden voice and are among the best singers that Bollywood has ever seen...

I wanted to pick 10 songs of Rafi that I love... but I found it extremely tough to shortlist just 10 ... everything seems to be so good. Anyways, here are my favorite top 10 Rafi songs...

1. Kaun hai jo sapno mein aaya ... (Jhuk gaya aasman)
2. Deewana hua baadal.. (Kashmir ki kali)
3. Gun guna rahe hai bhawrein.. (Aaradhana)
4. Khoya khoya chand... (Kala bazar)
5. Pukarta chala hu mein... ( Mere Sanam)
6. Aankhon hi aankhon mein... (CID)
7. Gulabi aankhein jo teri dekhi... (cant remember the movie name)
8. Tumse accha kaun hai.. (Jaanwar)
9. Teri bindiya re.. (Abhimaan)
10.O haseena... (Teesri manzil)

If u haven't heard any of these.. I suggest u listen to them ...... am sure u will see the magic that I am talking about :)

Music that grows....

All of us wud have experienced at some point, the kind of music which when heard for the first time may not sound good, but it just grows on us as we keep listening to it. The music from the movie 'Life in a Metro' is one such good example. Here are the songs that I am talking about
  • Alvida (the best song in the movie)
  • Rishtey..
  • Baatein kuch ankahee si...
  • In dino..
  • O meri jaan
The first time I heard these songs was when I watched the movie in the theater. I just found it to be very boring and all the songs seemed quite similarly composed. But I started listening to it about 2-3 weeks back and I've fallen in love with each and every song. It seems to create a magical effect on my mood everytime I listen to them, even today!

One unique thing is that the movie has "all male" singers. KK has done an awesome job again. The guitar work in "Alvida..." is superb... and I am falling short of words to appreciate the lyrics of this song apart from the lovely music..

Highly recommended, if u still haven't heard them... If u dont like them in the first shot, keep listening and u might start loving them, just like I did :)
